Postmaster siphons off Rs 1 cr from NREGS funds

A branch postmaster of Sativada town in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh has reportedly siphoned off Rs 1 crore by withdrawing excess amount during every NREGS transaction from the government account.

Talla Narayana Rao withdrew these funds from the sub-postmasters’ offices for payment of NREGS work, says a report by the high-level probe that detected fraud in other places too and is inspecting all 424 branch post offices and 65 sub post-offices in the district.

The accused reportedly changed the figure “1” into “7” and draw up to Rs 60,000 more in every transaction.

For instance, if the amount to be paid is Rs 10,000, the actual amount withdrawn was Rs 70, 000. The amount was not printed in words in the slip generated by POTD. Senior officers of the Gara sub-post office are supposed to cross-check the amount in the DoP portal, but it has not been done in the past three years, said the investigators.

Srikakulam Postal Superintendent Janapala Prasadbabu said the department could recover Rs 43 lakh from Narayana Rao by selling his properties located in various places.
