A vehicle thief snatched a police sub-inspector’s (SI) revolver and stabbed him to death in Nelamangala Town in the Bengaluru Rural district on Friday afternoon.

S Jagadish (33), who was attached to the Doddaballapur Town police station, was chasing a father-son duo reportedly involved in two-wheeler thefts when he was killed.
The assailant, Madhu, after attacking Jagadish also stabbed constable Venkatesh Murthy on the back when he chased him. The constable has been hospitalised.

The police are on the lookout for Madhu and his father.
“We have constituted a team led by the IGP (Central Range) and Bengaluru Rural Additional SP to investigate the case and arrest the duo. The Nelamangala DySP will be the investigating officer,” said DG&IGP Omprakash. Jagadish, a resident of Kadugodi in Bengaluru, is survived by his wife and two daughters.

The SI was tracking Madhu and his father, reportedly involved in several vehicle thefts.
Around 11 am, Jagadish was tipped off that the duo would come near a Hero Honda showroom in Nelamangala town.

He and constables Venkatesh Murthy, Anand, Gangadhar, Shashidhar and Chandrashekhar rushed to the spot.

“Jagadish was near the showroom while the four constables took positions in different locations. Madhu and his father came near the showroom, but started running on noticing Jagadish,” ADGP (Law and Order) Alok Mohan told reporters.

Jagadish chased them with a revolver in his hand. After chasing them for about half a kilometre, he almost caught one of them. But he couldn’t see a small drain in the way, stepped and fell into it.

Fearing that the sub-inspector would fire at him, Madhu snatched his revolver and repeatedly stabbed him with a dagger before running away, said the ADGP.

Venkatesh Murthy, who witnessed the attack, continued the chase, but he too was stabbed. He then alerted the nearest police station. The local police rushed to the spot and took Jagadish and Venkatesh to a government hospital in Nelamangala. Jagadish was reportedly declared brought dead as he had bled excessively.

“We will recommend Jagadish’s name for the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry Services, awarded posthumously. His family will get Rs 50 lakh under various schemes and his wife a government job matching her qualification. Police will bear the educational expenses of his children,” added Om Prakash.
