The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Monday said it has rewarded an RTI applicant from Belagavi for exposing a private developer who was overcharging at a toll plaza on NH-4 in Belagavi.

They recovered an excess of Rs 1.8 crore from the agency, Konark Infrastructure Ltd.
“Based on the RTI application filed by Prashant Ashok Burge, Belagavi in March, 2013, regarding collection of excess user fee at Hattargi on the Belagavi-Maharashtra border, NHAI investigated the matter,” said a statement. It was found that the user fee being collected for car/jeep/van (LMV) was Rs 20 and Rs 40 instead of the prescribed Rs 15 and Rs 35, respectively.

The NHAI immediately stopped the collection of excess fee. “Besides, as a corrective measure, notice boards have been put up on all toll booths, displaying that passengers can collect their excess fee of Rs 5 after producing proof of identification and the fee charged,” the statement said.

NHAI said it appreciated the complainant and has accorded an approval for a reward amount of Rs 10,000 to Prashant Ashok Burge.
