The City police on Tuesday arrested a 21-year-old man for causing the death of his neighbour in a road accident 15 days ago.

According to police, B M Rohit, a resident of Cholurupalya on Magadi Road, had fled the spot after her neighbour, Manjula Bai fell off the bike he was riding, near Kengeri bus stop on the night of October 11. She succumbed to injuries at Nimhans on the next day.

Manjula had planned to visit Ukkadamma temple near Pandavapura and wanted to board a bus from satellite bus stop on Mysuru Road on the night of October 11. She requested Rohith to drop her at the bus stop. She rode pillion on Rohit’s black bike. Since there were no buses at the satellite station, Manjula asked Rohit to drop her at the Kengeri bus stop.

As soon as they left for Kengeri, it started to rain heavily. Rohith rode the bike recklessly on road hump. Manjula was thrown up in air, fell down, suffered head injuries. A shocked Rohith fled from the spot, said the police.

A few local residents rushed Manjula to a nearby hospital and informed the police. She was shifted to Nimhans for treatment where she died on October 12. Despite several efforts, the police were unable to establish her identity. After keeping the body in Nimhans mortuary for a week, they performed the final rites at Wilson Garden crematorium.

Meanwhile, Manjula’s husband, Srinivas, lodged a missing complaint of his wife with the Magadi Road police on October 15. The Magadi Road police contacted other police stations to gather leads. Their counterparts shared details  of the accident on the night of October 11. The police went to the spot and spoke to eyewitnesses who said that they had spotted a youth absconding on a black bike, said the police.

The police verified mobile call details of Manjula and it was found that she had made the last call to Rohith. The police also noticed that Rohith was using a black colour bike. He was taken into custody and during interrogation, he spilled the beans. He said he was afraid of further consequences and hence fled the accident spot, police added.
