Bhyrappa is new mayor, Vanita Prasanna deputy

Corporators B L Bhyrappa and G H Vanita Prasanna were elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively in the elections held at the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) here on Friday.

With this, Janata Dal (Secular) and BJP combine continued to hold the reins for the third consecutive term of the five-year council as anticipated. Bhyrappa, a JD(S) nominee, secured 41 votes against his lone rival from Congress D Nagabhushan, who got 33 votes. Vanita from BJP also secured the same number of votes, but her rival from Congress C S Rajani secured 32 votes, as one corporator remained neutral when the deputy mayor’s post was put to vote.

Bhyrappa, who represents Ward 12 in the civic body, is a two-time corporator, so also Vanita from Ward 65. Bhyrappa had won the election on Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) ticket, but later joined JD(S), after the KJP was merged with the BJP.  Following the end of the term of previous mayor R Lingappa and Deputy Mayor M Mahadevamma on October 8, the Municipal Administration Department had announced the reservation list fixing the mayor’s post for Backward Class and Minorities (A) candidate and deputy mayor for General (woman).

They are the city’s 18th mayor and deputy mayor and will be in office for one year from November 13, 2015, as announced by Chamarajanagar Deputy Commissioner A M Kunjappa, who also holds the additional charge of regional commissioner, the returning officer for the polls.

Bhyrappa, 56, a BCom graduate from the University of Mysore, is an alumnus of D Banumaiah’s College. He is a native of Lakshmipura, near Saligrama in K R Nagar taluk in the district. Vanita, 39, a BA graduate from PES College, Mandya, hails from Gulur near Koppa in Maddur taluk.
