Even before several thousands of rescued people in Tamil Nadu could return to their homes, they have to brace themselves  to face another low pressure  as rain started to pour in the region.

The death toll due to heavy rain in Tamil Nadu crossed 150, with a total of 24 people losing their lives in Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur and Chennai in the last two days.

“A new trough of low pressure area has been formed over the Arabian Sea, which is likely to move in the northwest direction. Due to this, heavy rain is expected once again over Tamil Nadu from Thursday”, a senior Met official said on Thursday evening.

In the past ten days, Tamil Nadu has been reeling under heavy flood due to last week’s depression, which was followed by a low pressure.

A third new low pressure for this Northeast Monsoon season has brought fear among the people once again.

Meanwhile, more than one lakh people were evacuated from low-lying areas across the state and were lodged in relief camps.

Three defence forces teams — Army, Navy and Air Force along with Coast Guard, pressed into service for rescue operations, still kept ready in case of emergency.

PWD sources also said that many reservoirs and lakes are overflowing, as revenue officials issued flood alerts and evacuated affected people especially in the banks of rivers and water bodies.

Meanwhile, a central government team will arrive in rain-ravaged Tamil Nadu very soon to assess the damage caused by depression followed by heavy flood especially in the northern districts of the state.
