BMRCL to rejuvenate two lakes

Last Updated 25 November 2015, 20:25 IST

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) will undertake the project to rejuvenate the Kengeri Lake and Veerasandra Lake in the City.

Tenders have already been floated for the Kengeri lake and in the next few days, bids will also be invited for the Veerasandra Lake.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, senior BMRCL official U A Vasanth Rao said that the State government has handed over the lake rejuvenation works to BMRCL in an effort to speed-up lake development works across Bengaluru. During a meeting with various government organisations, BMRCL was asked to take up rejuvenation of the Kengeri and Veerasandra Lakes, he added.

The Kengeri Lake, located right next to the Mailasandra station on the west extension, will be developed under phase two of the metro project, while the Veerasandra Lake, located close to the Electronics City, will also fall under phase two. A detailed project report  will soon be prepared, after which the costsheet for the rejuvenation works will be made, he further said.

This is the second time BMRCL is inviting tenders for the development of the Kengeri Lake. This time, the conditions for the tender process have been relaxed and this will make it a bit easier for different companies to apply and get selected for the project, he said.

The Veerasandra Lake was developed by the State Forest department at an estimated cost of Rs 95 lakh in 1995. As part of the project, the forest department had developed islands, pathways and also fenced the 25-acre lake, apart from providing boating facilities. Since then, the lake has not been well-maintained. The BMRCL wants to make the lake a hub where people can get together.
