Following protests and efforts by local residents, the dilapidated Varthur Vibgyor Road near Kundalahalli gate was asphalted recently.

However, after a few bouts of rain in the last few weeks, the road is back to its original state. This 40 feet road connects ITPL with Hebbal and other northern parts of the City.

The residents heaved a sigh of relief when the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials asphalted a portion of the road in September spending Rs 70 lakh. But craters have already appeared on the stretch.

Rohan K, a local resident, said: “The Palike took two whole days to asphalt the lane. The one-km road has never been asphalted completely and, presently, about 65 per cent of it remains concreted. The first time the Palike asphalted the road was in December 2014. And most of the portions have peeled off. There are two schools and about 60-70 school vans have to ride along the road.”

Besides the bad roads, the Varthur Vibgyor Road also lacks underground drainage facility and footpaths, and more than 60 per cent of the streetlights are non-functional. There are around 2,000 houses along the road.

Shivakumar J, another resident, pointed that accidents occurred every day on the potholed road and elderly citizens fear walking on the stretch.

“About 80 per cent of the residents here work at the neighbouring ITPL and to reach their workplace, they have to commute on this road. The Palike authorities are least bothered. Since 10 years, the condition of the road has remained almost the same.”

One of the BBMP officials from the Doddanekundi ward (number 85), under which the road falls, told this newspaper that they would be tarring the road at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore and that about 500 metres of the stretch were asphalted recently.

The official further said the works were carried out hurriedly as a few landlords did not want the road to be asphalted. The lack of drains has only worsened the condition of the road due to rains.
