India keen to host U-20 meet

India is among the three countries to have expressed interest to host for the World Under-20 Championships in athletics to be held next year.

The event was originally allotted to Russia but following the suspension of the Russian athletics federation, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) invited fresh bids from member nations for hosting the championships.

The Athletics Federation of India has not specified the city where it would like to host the event. The other two contenders are Australia (Perth) and Poland (Bydgoszcz), the IAAF stated.

Four countries --  Ecuador (Guayaquil), Italy (Rome), Mexico (Monterrey), Ukraine (Kiev) — have expressed interest to host the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships.

“The IAAF is extremely grateful to its Member Federations for their support,” IAAF President Sebastian Coe said. “Reallocating the race walking team and the U-20 championships is of vital importance. We are safeguarding the dreams and aspirations of athletes worldwide. Considering the necessary speed of the process, that seven Member Federations from five continental areas have formally expressed an interest in bidding is clear evidence that the events have appeal.”

As per the accelerated process put in place to reallocate the two events, there will be a conference call on Thursday to provide supplementary information and to answer questions.

On December 22, completed bid applications have to be submitted to the IAAF and from December 23 to January 6, IAAF will review the applications. The electronic vote by the IAAF Council on the host venue will be on January 7, when the successful venues will be named.
