Philately bureau to come up near GPO in City

The Department of Posts will soon come up with something interesting in the City for stamps aficionados.

A philately bureau that will be equipped with  various facilities such as a coffee shop, library-cum-reading room and post shoppe are planned to be set up near the Bengaluru General Post Office (GPO).

The bureau will be constructed on a plot adjacent to the GPO.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Nikilesh Melkote, secretary of the Karnataka Philately Society, said that the land originally belonging to the Department of Posts had been handed over to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) for Metro rail works.

The plot has now been handed over back to the postal department, he further added.

Entries invited
‘He said, “The bureau will have postal exhibits along with stamp collections put up by our Society members. The place will also be utilised for holding meetings and discussions, especially on topics related to philately. For the design of the structure, India Post has invited entries from students of Bachelor of Architectural course in the city.”

The Chief Postmaster General, Karnataka Postal Circle,  said that the purpose of the construction of the bureau and post shoppe was to beautify the area around the GPO and at the same time tap the business potential, according to an official press release.

The release, inviting students to design the structure of the bureau, stated that the last date to receive the entries is January 31.

The first prize winner gets Rs 30,000 and the second prize winner Rs 20,000. The third prize winner gets Rs 10,000.

Expert jury
The designs will be judged by a jury comprising of Chief Engineer (Civil), Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications and IT, a senior architect from the department of posts and others.
