Alastrikattehundi residents: United they live, divided they vote

People of Alastrikattehundi in Chamarajanagar taluk, celebrate festivals, jatras and cultural programmes together but come local body elections and they have to vote for different set of contestants and at different polling booths.

The village, with 400 voters, is divided between Chamarajanagar and Mysuru districts. Reason: The road that passes through the village, which separates the villagers.
While one side of the village comes under T Narsipur taluk of Mysuru district, the other portion belongs to Chamarajanagar taluk.

Out of the 400 voters in the village, 160 belong to Naviluru Grama Panchayat of Chamarajanagar taluk and come under Kollegal Assembly constituency. The voters have to cast their vote for Jannur Taluk Panchayat and Santhemarahalli Zilla Panchayat constituencies.

According to the Election Commission rules, there should be one polling booth for every 1,500 voters. But, as the number of voters in the village is less, there is no polling booth and people have to exercise their franchise at a booth in Alur, about two kilometres away.

Mysuru district
The other 240 voters of the village are included in the list under Alagudu Gram Panchayat, T Narsipur taluk, Mysuru district. They come under Varuna Assembly constituency, represented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

They have to cast their votes for the forthcoming polls at Bannallihundi polling booth, situated at a distance of one kilometre.

Since the introduction of the Panchayat Raj system, the voters list has been divided
and no steps have been taken to rectify it, even during the delimitation process.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Naviluru Gram Panchayat president Naganna said, “The voters are united only in the Lok Sabha polls as T Narsipur taluk also comes under Chamarajanagar Parliamentary constituency. However, the village has not been neglected. It is developed with the funds allocated to both the gram panchayats. Priority has been given for drinking water and cleanliness.”
