A 23-year-old man died and four others of his family were injured in a LPG cylinder blast at their house in Vinayak Nagar in Hebbagodi on Sunday morning.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Ambarish. His sister Anusuyamma (35), her husband Malesh (40), and their children Harish (20) and Jagadish (12) suffered severe burns and are being treated at Victoria Hospital. The family supplied tea and coffee to employees in factories located in Hebbagodi.

On Saturday night, Anusuyamma had not switched off the regulator properly after preparing dinner. The next morning, around 5.30, she went to the kitchen to make tea. When she turned the kitchen light on, the LPG cylinder exploded, setting the room on fire. A wall collapsed on Ambarish, who was sleeping next to the kitchen.

Anusuyamma, who was inside the kitchen was engulfed in fire. Hearing the explosion, Malesh and his sons ran to rescue Anusuyamma. But they too were injured in the fire, said the police.

Hearing their screams, the neighbours rushed to the house and rescued the victims. They doused the fire with blankets. They informed the police, who alerted the Fire and Emergency Services personnel.

The injured were shifted to Victoria Hospital and the Fire officials retrieved Ambarish’s body from the debris. They rushed him to a nearby hospital but was declared brought dead.

The police also said the walls of a few neighbouring houses weer damaged in the explosion. According to the doctors, injured are in critical condition and are kept under observation. Hebbagodi police have registered a case.
