Selco Foundation, which is working to create a socially sustainable society,  organised a digital education programme at the government school at Balpa village under Adarsh Sansad Gram Yojana in the district recently.

Selco Solar Light Private Limited Consultant N A Lakshminarayana Rao said students are taught lessons through audio visual system instead of general classroom teaching in this system. It uses structured syllabus of the State government for teaching English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.

The syllabus is available in both Kannada and English, with a voice-over making the lessons self-explanatory, he added.

He said they are implementing digital education programmes in 200 government schools in remote villages in Dakshina Kannada, Tumakuru, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga and other districts.

Rao said, “The system makes a teacher's role much simpler. To go with this system, the teachers have also been imparted training so that they are wellversed with the lessons before they run it in the classroom. The unique projector has an minicomputer, speakers, power supply panel and remote mouse fitted to it, which makes it energy-efficient.”

He said the foundation is trying to improve the living standards of poor rural households through solar energy-based intervention.

Solar power centreRao said the foundation is also helping people to find new ways of livelihood. A physically challenged man in Beedinagudde in Udupi district was imparted training and he has set up a solar powered centre which meets the fundamental energy needs of the community. His centre offers a combination of  energy services, such as lighting, mobile charging, charged batteries, and others, on a daily rental basis. Hawkers get their lights charged at the centre to use in carts at night to carry out their business, he added.

Selco Foundation is a wing of Magsaysay award winner Harish Hande's Selco India which facilitates learning among the poor in villages.
