Rajashekara Swami of D M Kurke Boodihal Viraktha Mutt was killed in a car crash near Gollarahalli in the taluk early on Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred when the seer, who was at the wheel, crashed the car into a culvert near Gollarahalli in Kanakatte hobli around 6.30 am, sources said.
Rajashekara had participated in a religious programme at Shivyoga Mandira in Badami taluk, Bagalkot district, on Monday, and had reached Arsikere at 4 am by train. Later, he visited Bidare Mutt along with Prabhukumara Shivacharya Swami and was bound for D K Kurke by car, the sources said.
As soon as the news of the seer’s death spread, devotees from D M Kurke, Madalu, Soppinahalli, Sadarahalli, Shashiwala and other villages arrived at the accident spot, the sources added.
