Special talks in Manipal University

Two special talks --- one on ‘Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore’ and another on ‘European Refugee Crisis’ --- will be organised on March 4 and 5 by the Centre for Gandhian and Peace Studies, Manipal University in association with other departments of the university.

According to a press release, the talk ‘Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore’ will be delivered by Prof Bashabi Fraser, Director, Scottish Centre for Tagore Studies, Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland, UK, at 5.45 pm in the AC Seminar, Academic Block 2, MIT in association with the Tagore Centre of the Manipal University, on March 4.

The talk on ‘European Refugee Crisis’ will delivered by Prof Neil Fraser, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, at 4.30 pm in LH1, first floor, Old Tapmi building in collaboration with the Department of Geopolitics and International Relations, Manipal University. on March 5.

Prof Bashabi Fraser is a poet, children’s writer, translator and editor. Her publications include Raga & Reels (2012), Scots Beneath the Banyan Tree: Stories from Bengal (2012), From the Ganga to the Tay (2009), Bengal Partition Stories: An Unclosed Chapter (for which she was awarded a British Academy research grant), Tartan & Turban (2004) and ‘A Meeting of Two Minds: The Geddes–Tagore Letters’. Her commissioned works include The Ramayana, a play written with a Scottish Arts Council writer’s grant, and her co-edited anthology ‘Rainbow World: Poems from Many Cultures’ (Hodder & Stoughton, 2003), which was runner-up for the Emma best book award.

Prof Neil Fraser’s research interests include employment policies, including the comparative study of employment in different countries, the economic appraisal of social policies, and comparative public expenditure.

He has done a study of in-work poverty in the UK as part of a study of in-work poverty in Europe.
