Chamarajanagar MP and also Chairman of District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee R Dhruvanarayan, on Saturday, said, Karnataka lagged behind in implementing various programmes under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) and urged the officials concerned to take special interest in development activities.

Chairing a meeting of the committee at the Zilla Panchayat hall, here, Dhruvanarayan said, when Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have spent Rs 4,964 crore and Rs 3,356 crore respectively on rural development activities, Karnataka has spent only Rs 1,682 crore, he said.

“The State is not utilising available funds and so, the officials concerned should take special interest in using the funds on various development activities in rural areas. The authorities can spend Rs 30 lakh per year on each village,” he said.

Ramanagar district, which has only four taluks, has spent Rs 113 crore and has achieved 115 per cent target, but Mysuru district has achieved only 69.56 per cent success, he pointed out.

Krishnaraja Nagar MLA Sa Ra Mahesh suggested availing guidance from Ramanagar Zilla Panchayat. He said, political conflict in regions also result in tardy development activities.

Dhruvanarayan said, tribal people’s development and drinking water supply should be given priority. An official said, they have invested Rs 50.40 lakh and completed 168 works in drought-hit taluks of Nanjangud, T Narasipur, HD Kote and Periyapatna. “To ensure sufficient drinking water facilities, ‘Jalaseva Niyantrana Kotadi’ has been established at taluk and district levels,” he said.

The Education department has identified 1,700 school dropouts in the district. A majority of children belong to migratory families. To avoid school dropouts, the authorities have provided hostel facilities to children of migratory family. At present, 201 students are pursuing education by staying in hostels, said an official attached to the Education department.

The MP opined that frequent transfer of taluk panchayat Executive Officers (EOs) result in lack of development activities. The EO and Zilla Panchayat CEO play prominent roles in development activities. They should serve for at least three years in one place, he said.

NH four lane by June end
Four-laning of the road between Mysuru and Nanjangud and widening of the National Highway on Kollegal-Kerala borders will be completed by June end, according to the MP.

The works on the 21.51 km of road between Mysore and Nanjangud will be completed and the widening of 26.90-km stretch of the National Highway between T Narasipur and Kollegal, 2-km road in Gundlupet town, widening of 15.90-km road from Gundlupet to Mulehole and 9.8-km road inside Mysuru city to four-lane will be completed by June, said an official.

The MP directed the authorities to plant saplings in place of the trees cut down and also urged to provide compensation for land owners, soon.
