With a week left for SSLC exams to start from March 30 in the State, the Education department is making all efforts to improve the overall percentage of results. Varuna, the Assembly constituency represented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is no exception.

The Education department has a set target of improving the results by five notch high to 95 per cent against 90.5 per cent scored in the previous year in the Assembly segment.

BEO (rural) Vivekananda told Ramaiah, on Wednesday, that efforts were being made to improved results. As many as 4,600 students are set to appear for the exam.

Ramaiah, who presided over the Karnataka Development Programmes (KDP) progress review meeting at Mini Vidhana Soudha here, sought to know about the progress of the works and directed the officials to attend to complaints on priority. The meeting assumes significance in view of the chief minister’s visit to the city on Thursday.

‘Insufficient fund’
The BEO brought it to the notice of Ramaiah the demand of Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KRIDL) officials who had stated that Rs 40-lakh grant was insufficient for the construction of additional classrooms in the schools under the constituency.

Some Grama Panchayat members, who were attending the meeting, raised the issue of oversize uniforms being distributed to school students. Some of them insisted on taking measurement of every student before stitching and distributing the uniforms.

Child Development Planning Officer (CDPO) Bettegowda sought the intervention of the joint secretary in getting sites for at least 20 anganwadi centres in the constituency.

Bettegowda said, “Of the total 99 anganwadis in the segment, 60 have own buildings, while 11 are in a state of disarray. The respective panchayat development officers (PDOs) should be directed to provide sites to the remaining 20 anganwadis,” he said.

Assistant Director for Agriculture K P Veeranna explained about the necessity to set up warehouse to store seeds. The engineering division of the ZP should be directed to take measures in this regard, he said.

That apart, Veeranna said, the department had issued tillers to 30 farmers at subsidised rates. Zilla Panchayat Engineer K N Jagadish said, of the total 35 road works taken up this fiscal, 32 had been completed, while the remaining were under progress.

Cement road works have been completed at Varuna village, followed by Vajamangala, M C Hundi, Sajjehundi, Hosahundi, Keelanpura and others, he added. Ramaiah told the officials to ensure drinking water supply, as water sources were likely to dry up soon.

The onus is on the PDOs to address drinking water needs. Or else, they will be held responsible. There is no dearth of funds and the officials should work in coordination with others, Ramaiah said.
