The CPM leader’s body, found floating in the suburban Porur lake, was retrieved by the police. Varadarajan’s wife Saraswathi has identified his body at the Government Royapettah Hospital mortuary here on Sunday, police sources said.

Varadarajan was 63 and is survived by wife and two children, including an adopted son. The veteran party leader, who was until recently a member of the CPM’ Central Committee from Tamil Nadu and also All-India secretary of its trade union affiliate CITU, suddenly did the disappearance act in the wake of a personal crisis in the family.

As Varadarajan’s body had decomposed badly, the police said a final confirmation of the identification of his body will be done only after the post-mortem report is obtained.

A senior CPM source told Deccan Herald here on Sunday: “We believe his wife has identified his body.” But the state committee of the CPM is awaiting the official report, the source said.
