Women are mentally strong while men lack willpower: CM

 Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, on Friday, said the state government was committed to women’s welfare.

Addressing the gathering after inaugurating a two-day divisional-level workshop on ‘Human Rights: Women and Laws’, organised jointly by Karnataka State Women’s Commission, district administration, zilla panchayat, Mysuru City Corporation and the University of Mysore, at Senate Bhavan, here, Siddaramaiah said, as propagated by Mahatma Gandhi, the country will really be independent when a woman is allowed to roam outside without any fear, even during midnight hours.

Heaping praises on women, he said, women are mentally strong and it was evident with her taking care of family and also education of children. Though physically strong, men lack willpower and hence fall prey to habits to overcome problems. 

Saying that the State government and also the Congress party is for social justice, Siddaramaiah complimented the then government of S M Krishna for setting up stree-shakti sanghas with an aim for social and economic development of women.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister Dinesh Gundurao said, though law against dowry was introduced in 1960, women are still treated inhumanely in the name of dowry.

Karnataka State Women’s Commission Chairperson Manjula Manasa, who highlighted the plight of women in her introductory address, said, in the last 10 years, over seven lakh women-related cases had been booked in the State.

She hailed the government for providing monthly pension to acid victims, a first-of-its-kind initiative by any State government.
