In view of severe drought in the district, the Jain Committee has decided to celebrate the Mahamasthakabhisheka at Shravanabelagola in 2018 in a simple manner, said Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swami of the Jain mutt.

Speaking at the national-level meeting of Digambara Jain Committee office-bearers in Shravanabelagola, on Wednesday, the Swami said, though the Mahamasthakabhisheka is slated to be held in 2018, it is feared that the effect of drought would be felt in the region for the next two years.

“Hence, the committee has decided to make it a simple affair, spending less money than the previous years. The issue has been discussed with representatives of Jain Maha Sabha and Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade, who have agreed. Heavy amounts will not be spent on utsava and other rituals. But, development works that are under progress on the premises will continue. The devotees will be provided all basic amenities. Instead of chalking out elaborate plans, stress will be on programmes for the welfare of the people. Let the God bless the country with good rains,” he said.

District In-charge Minister A Manju said the government would abide by the decision taken by the committee. Heggade was present.
