BBMP for coordinated effort in tackling rain-related woes

Last Updated 08 June 2016, 20:09 IST

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has turned to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for a comprehensive information about rainfall in the city.

The Palike approached two agencies for the better mobilisation of its resources ahead of the monsoon and reach out to the people in distress in quick time. The idea struck BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad when there was heavy rain in South Bengaluru while the northern part of the city was dry. In another similar case, HAL airport received 80 mm of rain while there was no trace of rain in northern Bengaluru.

The BBMP organised a workshop, which was attended by the KSNDMC officials, on ways to deal with rain-related woes in a better way. The BBMP commissioner asked the KSNDMC officials to alert the local body at least six hours in advance about the concentration of clouds and possible heavy rains in particular region of the city. The monitoring centre will share necessary information and satellite images with the Palike.

This will help information but also pass on the latest satellite images to the Palike offices along with the control room. This will help in better coordination between various wings of Palike and resource mobilisation in the specific part of the city where the heavy rains are predicted.

During the workshop, KSNDMC Director Dr Srinivas Reddy asked the BBMP officials to identify places prone to flooding whenever there are 30 mm to 40 mm rain and 50 mm to 80 mm rain.

This will enable the agency in establishing a temporary help centre to avert any untoward incident.
