Floodwaters recede in Assam

Last Updated 03 August 2016, 19:11 IST

The state government has started restoration works in Assam as floodwaters further receded. People too have begun leaving the relief camps.

The recent wave of floods in the state left 32 people dead and 40 lakh affected.
While 14 districts are still engulfed by floodwaters as the Brahmaputra and seven of its tributaries are flowing above the danger level, nearly 7.70 lakh people are still affected.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, as on Tuesday, 804 villages have remained affected by floods and 23,000 people have taken shelter in 117 relief camps.

The state government has started its assessment of damage and restoration works on war footing, official sources said.

The Army troops swung into action helping the civil administration to control the flood situation in Majuli.

“The Army personnel from the nearby 41 Sub Area, Jorhat and Spear Corps, toiled relentlessly, skillfully employing their resources in plugging the breach in the anti-flood bund near Bongaon in Majuli. This breach, which caused the devastating floods on the largest riverine island affecting thousands of people has, to a large extent, been tamed,” said Guwahati-based defence PRO Lt Col Suneet Newton.

Newton added that the Army troops have been assisting the district administration in providing flood relief at Majuli Island from July 28.

Rhino carcass recovered
On Wednesday, a carcass of an adult male rhino, which had died due to the devastating floods in Kaziranga National Park (KNP), was recovered with its horn fallen off, near Bokpara Forest Camp in Kohora Range of the KNP, official sources said.

Due to the massive floods in Kaziranga, 311 animals have died, including 22 one-horned rhinos and 221 hog deer, besides other animals, sources added.

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has lashed out at the BJP-led government in Assam alleging it has failed to tackle the devastating problems of floods, erosion and encephalitis in the state.

In a statement on Wednesday, AJYCP president Biraj Kumar Sarma said, "The current flood has, in fact, exposed the utter inefficiency of the government where nearly 50 people died, not to speak of the lakhs affected in the state."
