Traffic signals become functional in C'ballapur

Last Updated 04 March 2010, 18:07 IST

Shidlaghatta circle  (Dr Ambedkar Circle) has the highest traffic density in the City. The circle is an intersection point for the vehicles coming  Bangalore and Bagepalli side on National Highway-7 and those coming from Gauribidanur and Shidlaghatta. Further, old bus stand, Travellers’ Bungalow, Assistant Commissioner’s Office, Taluk Office, banks and educational institutions are located in the vicinity of the circle. People have to take this route for all their necessities thus contributing for the congestion on the stretch. Students too have to traverse the circle and there are instances of several accidents at this junction. Chaos become more pronounced on Wednesdays and Saturdays - the shandy days.

Bullock carts heading to APMC yard, tractors crowd the stretch on these days. There has been let up in the vehicular density in spite of construction of a bypass, particularly after the City became a district headquarters. It was nearly impossible to regulate the traffic.
The district police had submitted a proposal to install traffic signals to control the movement of vehicles. The government gave the go ahead and the City Municipal Council provided Rs 10 lakh. Solar energy operated Traffic signals have now been installed at the four corners of the busy circle.

Traffic police station
Traffic control in the City would become much more easier with the sanction of a Traffic Police station. Civil police personnel were performing the duty of traffic cops even after two years of the City becoming a district headquarters. This had put additional burden on the existing staff. Following a proposal by the district police, the government has sanctioned a Traffic Police Station which would be functional in a span of one week, informed Superintendent of Police, Ravindra Prasad.
A sub-inspector, two assistant sub-inspectors, eight head constables and 24 constables will be attached to the Traffic Police Station. The City roads may be decongested with the new paraphernalia in place.
