Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav promised justice to two minor sisters, who had written a letter to him in blood seeking punishment to the killers of their mother, who also included their own father.

The two sisters, whose mother had died of severe burns in a hospital in June this year, had said in the letter that they had witnessed their mother’s killing and had also accused the local police of not arresting the culprits.

All for a boy

The elder sister, a resident of UP’s Bulandshahar town, about 500 kilometres from here, said that her father and other members of his family had thrown her mother out of the house after her younger sister was born.

“My father and others wanted a boy... so they threw us out of our house,” said Pooja (name changed). She said that her grandmother wanted her son to divorce his wife and marry someone else.

Set ablaze

“They came to our rented accommodation on June 14... there was a heated discussion and fight and thereafter they poured kerosene on my mother and set her ablaze,” Pooja said.
The severely burnt woman was rushed to hospital but succumbed to injuries after battling for life for six days.

Police not helpful

Pooja said that she had approached the in-charge of the local police station in Bulandshahar but was shooed away from the police station. “Though my father was arrested after a report was lodged, the other culprits are roaming around freely,” she added.
