Man made to stand with poster for harassing woman

Last Updated 10 January 2017, 20:15 IST
A man was made to stand at Gun Park junction here with a poster in hand exhorting people not to harass women.

“End it now…Stop eve teasing,” says the poster in English and another in Urdu.

Onlookers were thrilled to know that the bearded man holding the socially pertinent poster was not a relative of a victim of eve-teasing, but the perpetrator himself.

Additional Commissioner of Police Swathi Lakra said the man, Mohammad Raheem (39), was convicted for harassing a woman.

Raheem kept calling the victim from different phones and was stalking her when her husband was not at home. The harassment continued even after the woman changed her SIM card several times.

Raheem, however, got hold of her new number every time she changed her SIM. When she stopped using a mobile phone, he started calling her husband, asking him to hand over the phone to his wife. This led to troubles in her married life. The situation got out of hand and the couple even consulted a counsellor to save their marriage.

After the harried woman filed a complaint with the ‘She Teams’, a initiative by the Telangana Police that comes to the rescue of women hounded by men in public places, a case was booked and Raheem was caught red-handed.

The Special Metropolitan Magistrate here on Monday not only convicted Raheem, but also directed him to stand at a busy traffic junction holding posters to create awareness for one day.

The ‘She Teams’, an all-women force, even use decoys to catch men red-handed while teasing women. So far 848 men have been caught while harassing women, and of this 236 are minors. Of the remaining offenders, many are around 50 years of age.
