Notwithstanding Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav’s ‘emotional appeal’ to his son and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to resolve the “family feud” through mutual discussions, the two SP factions appeared to be heading for a showdown over the party symbol at the Election Commission (EC) office on Friday.

Mulayam and Shivpal have already reached the national capital, and the duo will be consulting lawyers to give a final shape to their presentation before the EC, according to SP sources here.

SP leaders from the Akhilesh camp also left for Delhi on Wednesday, the sources said.

Sure of numbers

“We are sure that we will get a favourable decision from the EC. We have the numbers, so we are ready to contest on any other symbol,” said a leader from the Akhilesh camp.

The Mulayam camp echoed similar sentiments. “The party is ours, so is the symbol,” Mulayam said, while addressing party workers here.

SP sources said that both camps are now awaiting the EC decision on the symbol, and any further talks to resolve the crisis would depend on the ruling of the poll panel.
