Speaking at the state-level convention of Madiga community here on Saturday, she said reservation for oppressed classes is an affirmative action and not a gift. The provision stands nullified with the extinction of caste system. “Equality is a mirage in a caste-ridden society. Reservation has been provided for in the Constitution with the objective of heralding equality,” she postulated.

While the society is divided on the financial status of citizens in western countries, the Indian society is fractured on the basis of multiple factors. A major chunk of the society has been the victim of subjugation, the Speaker noted.

She expressed pleasure that it was during her tenure as Speaker that the Parliament approved the Constitutional amendment extending reservation for ten more years.
Lauding Karnataka for the rapid strides in information technology, she said the State is also in the vanguard of eradicating social evils.

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah,  Murugha mutt seer, Balagangadharanatha  swamiji  were present.
