India has asked its ambassador to the United States to convey to Amazon that it should ensure that the products sold on its online marketplaces should not hurt the sentiments of the people of the country.

The Ministry of External Affairs has asked India’s envoy to United States, Navtej Sarna, to convey to the top brass of Amazon that it should not allow its vendors to sell products, which could hurt the sentiments of the people of the country.

The government moved to take it up with Amazon top brass after some Twitter user drew attention of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj that the e-commerce company’s marketplace had on sale flip-flop slippers carrying images of Mahatma Gandhi. This comes close on the heels of outrage over doormats designed like national flag of India being put on sale in Amazon Canada’s website.
