Australia sniff innings victory

NZ follow-on after dismal display

New Zealand, 108 for four overnight, were forced to follow-on after managing an insignificant 157 in their first innings in pursuit of Australia’s 459 for five declared. Requiring to make 302 runs to make the visitors bat again, the hosts were reeling at 187 for five at the end of day three with skipper Daniel Vettori (18) holding fort alongside Brendon McCullum.

Once again, left-arm seamer Doug Bollinger, who took five wickets in the first innings, ran through the New Zealand top-order to bring them to the brink of an innings defeat.
New Zealand had good start to their second innings as Bradley-John Watling (33) and McIntosh forged a 70-run partnership after the tail had collapsed earlier in the day, 49 runs for the loss of six wickets.

Earlier, Australia came out firing on all cylinders to dismiss the Kiwis for a meagre total. Australia ended New Zealand's fightback by seeing the back of Vettori who was dismissed for 46 runs.

McCullum then attempted to revive New Zealand's innings, but Bollinger struck to dash any hopes of a late stand.
