Apex court not Amrit Dhara for all problems: CJI

The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up a petitioner for raising a ‘frivolous’ issue, saying the court does not have a solution for all the problems in the country.

It seemed the apex court had become ‘Amrit Dhara’ — a herbal medicine for all the ailments — to solve all the ills plaguing the country, it said.

“Today, it is like wake up in the morning and approach the Supreme Court. Why don’t you approach the competent authorities?” a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar said, as the counsel sought directions for putting in place a mechanism for the dignified transportation of corpses.

The petitioner had listed a number of incidents from Odisha to Madhya Pradesh, highlighting the lack of facilities for the appropriate transportation of bodies.

Speaking for the bench, also comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Justice Khehar said during his younger days Amrit Dhara used to be a potent solution for all ills.

“Now, it has come true for the Supreme Court. People think this court would provide solutions to all problems,” the bench said, declining to entertain the plea filed by Jaya Thakur.
