Chris Broad, the match referee for the India-Australia Test series, may have just breached his brief by speaking to a section of the visiting media after Virat Kohli alleged that the Australians were in the habit of looking at their dressing room before making calls on DRS.

While Kohli said India had complained about the same to umpires and match referee, Smith denied that there was a suggestion from the Indian captain that they seek advice from dressing room saying.

Broad, however, was quoted by The Daily Telegraph that the only time umpires were aware of Australians looking up to the box during DRS was the Smith incident. The conventional practice for match referees is not to speak to the media about on-field incidents but Broad appears to have broken the practice in a what appears a bid to clear Smith even before there could be an inquiry into it.
