In a league of her own

In a league of her own

She sounds as happy as her music. Jonita Gandhi, the Indo-Canadian Bollywood singer, has been enthralling her fans with  foot-tapping numbers.  She walked into the hearts of listeners with numbers like ‘Gilehriyaan’, ‘Saajan Aayo Re’, ‘The Breakup Song’ and ‘Sau Tarah Ke’, to name a few.

She has also made her presence felt on YouTube with some of her musical renditions. The singer chats with
Anila Kurian about her latest projects and how she is really looking forward to a break  soon.

Tell us about your latest release.
I sang ‘Ye Jawaani Teri’ from ‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’ with Nakash Aziz and it was a lot of fun. It’s the first time that I collaborated with Sachin and Jigar.

Were they fun to work with?
Oh, yeah! Ever since I moved to Mumbai, we have been talking about working together but it never worked out. I’m glad it finally happened. They were very encouraging and let me have fun during the recording as well.

Can you tell us your  favourite part of the song?
It has a very retro feel to it and takes me back to my childhood. I grew up listening to this genre of music and it was really refreshing to hear that once again. No one makes music like this anymore.

Any other projects you’re working on?
Lots of them actually, but I don’t think I am supposed to talk about them yet.

How about your YouTube channel?
Oh, wow! I’ve been meaning to put out more content out there for months now but my schedule is so packed that I haven’t had the time for it. I’ve already told my team that once the season is over, they should keep themselves free.

What can we expect to hear on your YouTube channel?
I have a few things in mind and it’s going to a lot of fun. You’ll have to wait and watch for more information.

There’s a talk about you making an appearance on the silver screen...
I haven’t said anything about it on my own and I don’t think I should be either. Let’s just say something is happening and we will know very soon.

Any South Indian projects?
I recently sang ‘Azhagiye’  from ‘Kaatru Veliyidai’. It was a very peppy song and I’m glad it is very popular with the listeners.

When’s your next vacation?
If I could, I would love to take one now! I don’t want to go anywhere — I would like to just sit at home or maybe do a bit of shopping and have some quality time for myself. That is all I’m asking for.

Your must-haves when you’re travelling?
A straightener, my phone charger and a backup outfit.
