Rajiv Gandhi assassination: SC seeks status report

Last Updated 01 May 2017, 20:16 IST

The Supreme Court on Monday sought a status report from the CBI on an ongoing probe by the Multi Disciplinary Monitoring Agency (MDMA) into the 1991 Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, saying the larger conspiracy has to be investigated.

A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Navin Sinha asked the CBI to file a detailed investigation report along with a time frame for completion of probe.

The court also directed the agency to indicate the legal hurdles, if any, and the steps taken to overcome these issues.

The court was hearing a plea by A G Perarivalan, one of the convicts whose death sentence was commuted to life term in the assassination case.

He had said that neither the CBI’s special investigation team nor the MDMA headed by it proceeded in a proper perspective to bring the accused to book, as several top people were involved in the case.

“This has to be investigated,” the bench said, adding that it may not be at the instance of the petitioner.
