Union Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Information M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday urged Muslims to come together to abolish the practice of triple talaq.

Speaking at the unveiling of the new logo of the M S Ramaiah group of institutions in the city, Naidu said that several backward practices such as Sati and child marriage in the Hindu religion were abolished with changing times and the same should be done on the issue of triple talaq.

On Sunday, the M S Ramaiah Group of Institutions, which runs M S Ramaiah Institute of Technology and M S Ramaiah Medical College among other institutes, unveiled the group’s new logo and a statue of founder Dr M S Ramaiah.

Naidu, said that the country requires the support of the private sector to provide facilities like health, education and transport. He said that the union government would support initiatives to improve the education sector through public-private partnerships.

Karnataka Higher Education minister Basavaraj Rayareddy said that the Central government was not providing enough funds for higher education. “If we want to compete at the global level, the standard of our education needs to improve. This year, the Central government has allocated Rs one lakh crore for higher education in the budget. But this is hardly enough. The state government has itself set aside  Rs 24,600 crore for higher education and Rs 2,000 crore for medical education,” he said.
