According to police, Rajeshwari, the victim, was travelling with her family from Mumbai to Tamil Nadu. While a few members of her family had their berths in the S4 coach, she and her husband were in the S9 coach of Dadar Express.

Rajeshwari had walked to the S4 compartment to meet her aunt and was returning to her berth when the incident occurred near the bathroom of S5 coach, the police added. A man suddenly lunged at her with a knife threateningly and demanded that she part with her chain. However, she held onto her jewellery, resisting him. In the melee, he slashed her on the head, neck and shoulders and jumped off the train.
