Fire ravaged Chennai Silks building collapses during demolition

Last Updated 17 June 2017, 09:34 IST
Major portion of the multi-storied Chennai Silks building, which was ravaged by major fire recently, collapsed on Saturday morning when workers were involved in demolishing the structure.

However, no one was injured in the mishap. Tamil Nadu government asked the authorities to demolish the building since the experts declared it was an unsafe structure.

A major fire broke out in the seven-storied retail showroom on May 31st early morning. Fire service personnel battled almost two days to put off the fire.

Though the demolition work started last week, it was stopped after the death of a crane operator. The victim died on the spot when a huge mount of concrete debris fell on the vehicle while demolishing the structure.

Soon after demolition work started again on Saturday, the huge front portion of Chennai Silks building collapsed.  Traffic on busy North Usman Road and South  Usman Road continued to remain suspended due to demolition works.
