India to face Canada in Edmonton

India will have to slug it out against Canada in the indoor stadium of Northlands Coliseum, Edmonton, in their quest to enter the Davis Cup World Group.

Canada host India in the first meeting between the two nations in the World Group play-offs from September 15-17.

India, with 4-1 wins over New Zealand and Uzbekistan in the Asia-Oceania Group 1 this year, are desperate to end their six-year spell in the zonal groups. The winning side will enter the elite group in 2018.

The Indians have lost all three of the World Group play-offs since defeat to Japan in 2011 saw them relegated from the top tier. In recent times, they have faced losses against Serbia (2014), Czech Republic (2015) and Spain last year.

Meanwhile, Canada has contested three World Group play-offs since their promotion to the top tier of the competition in 2011. They had lost the decisive fifth rubber to Great Britain in this year's first round after they were disqualified from the tie-deciding match with 17-year-old Denis Shapovalov hitting the ball in anger into the umpire’s face. They would be eager to avoid relegation to the zone group competition for the first time in seven years.
