The High Court of Karnataka on Friday directed the Block Education Officer, Bengaluru South, to allot seats to four children to Class I under the Right to Education (RTE) quota to another neighbourhood school without insisting that they undergo the lottery again.
Justice L Narayanaswamy passed an order in a petition filed by four six-year-olds who were allotted seats under the RTE at New Millenium School, Cooke Town. The school later rejected their seats claiming that it is a linguistic minority institution and appealed before the high court. Minority institutions have an exemption under the RTE Act.
Third round of lottery
The Commissioner of Public Instruction submitted before the high court that they would conduct the third round of lottery for allotting seats under the RTE Act. The government had previously informed the court that it has closed the allotment of seats under RTE. The third round will be conducted following pressure from parents.
