A toddler died after being attacked by a rooster in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district, about 500 km from here.

The incident occurred at Khushalipur village in the district on Wednesday. According to reports, the boy, aged around two-and-a-half years, was attacked when he was playing at a neighbour’s house.

His parents, both daily wagers, had gone to work in the fields, leaving their only son in the care of the neighbour, who raised roosters.

The child, while playing in the courtyard of the house, tried to catch one of the roosters. The bird, apparently scared, attacked the child and repeatedly pecked him, inflicting serious injuries, reports said.

Hearing the child’s cries, the family members rushed out only to find him unconscious and bleeding profusely. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, but was declared brought dead.

A shocked Mahatar Singh, the boy’s father, said he had never imagined that a rooster could kill his son.

It was not immediately clear if the neighbour reared the roosters for cockfighting, which is still a popular sport in some parts of the state, especially in the capital city of Lucknow and a few other towns.
