The police on Sunday arrested three more persons and detained 25 persons in connection with pelting of stones at Kaikamba during the funeral procession of slain RSS worker Sharath on Saturday.

Security was tightened across the district. While the situation was brought under control in Belthangady, Puttur and Sullia, the air was still a little tense in Farangipet and Kalladka. The streets of Kalladka wore a deserted look with low vehicular movement and many business establishments remaining closed. Both IGP (Western Range) P Harishekaran and SP Sudheer Kumar Reddy are camping in Bantwal to monitor the situation.

Harishekaran told DH that the police had arrested 10 persons on Saturday on charges of stone-pelting. The 13 persons arrested so far were produced before the Bantwal judge and would be remanded in judicial custody, he said and added that investigation would continue.

Special patrolling

The IGP said that seven sectors have been created on the 15-km stretch between Farangipet and Kalladka. Each sector is headed by a DySP who is assisted by more than 100 police staff members.

A special patrolling system has been introduced. A total of 26 check posts have been opened in Bantwal. The police have been directed to inspect all vehicles, said the IGP, adding that no untoward incidents were reported in Bantwal since Saturday evening.

Chiranjeevi, who was assaulted by three men on motorbikes at Kuhar Ranipura in Ullal Police Station jurisdiction is recovering in a private hospital.

Following the incident, Mangaluru police have tightened the security and special teams have been constituted to inspect suspicious vehicles.

MLA visits

Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar on Sunday visited the family of Sharath, who died of injuries suffered following the attack on July 7. He handed over a sum of Rs 1 lakh to Sharath’s father Thaniyappa Madivala.

The MLA said that high-level probe should be conducted and the accused arrested.
