City Municipal Council president Ramesh Kumar said action would be taken against those who litter garbage in the city.
He was speaking after dedicating nine autorickshaw tippers for public service here.
Kumar said the CMC members were prevailing upon the civic body to provide more tipper vehicles for garbage collection. Accordingly, nine additional vehicles have been pressed into service. With these vehicles, the number of garbage collection vehicles has become 25, he added.
He called upon the councillors to create awareness among the citizens in their respective wards to segregate wet and dry waste at source and also maintain their surroundings clean. If not, deadly diseases like dengue and chikungunya spread in the area, he cautioned. CMC commissioner R Srikanth said awareness has been created among all merchants at M G Market. A warning has also been given that legal action will be taken if waste is not segregated at source properly, he added.
Srikanth said two fogging machines have been purchased to control mosquitoes.
CMC vice president Jayanthi, Standing Committee chairman Lawrence, members Nataraj, Ashok, Kumar, Suresh, Dawid, Soundar Rajan, Stanley and health inspector Saraswathi were present.
