Congress questions PM's silence on BHU violence; wants VC out
Congress on Monday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on the violence against girl students at the Banaras Hindu University, a prominent institution in his Lok Sabha constituency.

Congress also demanded immediate removal of the Vice Chancellor of the university Girish Chandra Tripathi whom it accused of asking the police to take action against the girl students who were protesting against the alleged molestation of their colleague.

“The President, who is a Visitor at the university, should take cognizance of the matter and sack the vice chancellor immediately,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters here. He also demanded an inquiry by a sitting High Court judge to probe those responsible for ordering the cane charging of the students.

Tewari questioned the prime minister's silence on the violence unleashed on the girl students at the university at a time when hos government was promoting education of the girl child.

“We would like to know from the prime minister where does he stand on the atrocities against girl students in his own parliamentary constituency,” the Congress leader said.

“Our Prime Minister, who is vocal on every issue, takes to Twitter and also does his ‘Mann ki Baat’. But he is silent on the incident where girls are beaten up by the state police,” Tewari said.

On Saturday, police resorted to a cane charge injuring some protesting students outside their hostel at the BHU. The students had been protesting since Thursday after a first-year student alleged that she was molested by three men on bikes within the campus. “Instead of taking strict action against the culprits, Uttar Pradesh police rather resorted to cane charge on the girls. What kind of administration is this,” Tewari asked.
