Dreams made of crystals

Looking back on my life, I realise that I have been blessed to be able to do so many things. It’s been an amazing journey all the way.

Moving to India, being a VJ on MTV and then to be launched by David Dhawan in my first film, doing stage shows all over the world and performing with stars like Shah Rukh khan, Saif Ali Khan and Salman Khan — it’s been an incredible experience.

I can reflect upon a series of precious moments which all began with a very special song that I rendered. Seeing my song ‘Ek Pardesi Mera Dil Le Gaya’ top the charts invoked in me a feeling that cannot be expressed in words. The song was on hoardings all over the city, it played on the radio all day while the video was aired continuously on every channel.

Another song of mine ‘Mera Babu Chail Chabila’ was also a huge hit and is probably more loved today. However, it was ‘Ek Pardesi’ which took things to the next level for me.

I can’t forget watching the video in the studio for the first time and breaking down because I had worked so hard on the choreography, the expressions, the look, the styling etc. I’ll never forget how my mum took all night to stick Swarovski crystals on my heels before the shoot. The entire team put their heart and soul into that video which is why even after ten years, it looks so good. Seeing it all come together on TV was magical.

The icing on the cake was however playing to a crowd of 15-20,000 people in various stadiums. It was for that moment that I moved to India and my dream had indeed come true.

It was after watching ‘Ek Pardesi’ that director David Dhawan called me, saying he wanted to launch me in his film. He loved the song and thought I was perfect for the film.

Even though I was born and brought up in London, I was always into Bollywood films and fully ‘filmi’. I absolutely loved Govinda and Karisma in David Dhawan’s movies.

As a teenager, I often wished that one day I could also dance in European cities to these masala songs. And then it happened!  We shot for ‘Shaadi No 1’ in Italy and France. I couldn’t believe I was doing something I only dreamed of as a teen. I guess that’s why they say believe in your dreams because if you work hard enough and wish hard enough, your dreams can come true!
