A section of JD(S) MLCs on Monday charged Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy of eyeing the funds of the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) while neglecting its affairs.

Holding a joint press conference in Bengaluru, MLCs Basavaraj Horatti, Puttanna, Marithebbe Gowda, K T Srikante Gowda and others said Rayareddy had made no effort to seek recognition for KSOU. “He has neither contacted the University Grants Commission (UGC) or the Centre to obtain recognition for KSOU. He is only interested in looting Rs 600 crore funds of the university,” they charged.

Puttanna recalled Rayareddy had called vice-chancellors “dacoits”. “Instead of blaming vice chancellors, the minister must introspect.” The MLCs said the minister’s inaction in getting recognition to the university had raised many suspicions.

They said Union Human Resource Minister Prakash Javadekar had said the university will not be closed, but he has not made efforts to grant recognition to KSOU.
