ITBP team scales Gamin Peak

Last Updated 04 June 2009, 19:13 IST

China had denied permission to ski down from the side of the Mount Everest.

Seven of the 28-member ITBP mountaineering team had reached the summit of Mount Abi Gamin at around noon. The team then spoke to Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta and ITBP Director General Vikram Shrivastav over satellite phone. The mission was flagged off from New Delhi on May 1.

The skiers of this team are using specially imported helmets mounted with high-speed video cameras to record their ski journey downwards.

These cameras are being used for the first time by any mountaineering team in India. The team has four officers, five junior officers and a support staff of nine members.
This expedition is third in the pre-Everest expedition series. ITBP is planning first of its kind mountaineering and skiing expedition to Mount Everest in August-October 2009 if China permits.

Till date, the ITBP has scaled more than 160 national and international peaks and so far 21 ITBP personnel have scaled the Mount Everest.
