CBI registers FIR against George, two IPS officers

Last Updated 26 October 2017, 18:52 IST

The CBI on Thursday registered an FIR against Bengaluru Development Minister K J George and two senior IPS officers, Pranob Mohanty and Ashit Mohan Prasad, in connection with the death of DySP M K Ganapathy.

The CBI has re-registered the FIR, which was earlier registered by the Madikeri town police station.
The Supreme Court had ordered the CBI probe on a petition filed by Ganapathy’s brother M K Kushalappa. Ganapathy had been found hanging at Vinayaka Lodge in Madikeri on July 7, 2016.

Ganapathy had given an interview to a local TV channel a few hours before his death that George and the two IPS officers were torturing him.

The state government had ordered a probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into the incident. During the probe, George resigned and the two police officers were transferred.

George, who had resigned as the home minister, was later re-inducted into the ministry with a different portfolio.

The CID later closed the case stating that there was no evidence of harassment by the minister and the officers.

In the petition filed before the Supreme Court challenging the Karnataka High Court order declining a CBI probe, Kushalappa's advocate had stated that the CID filed the closure report without awaiting the forensic report.
