After a meeting with UIDAI chairperson, Nandan Nilekani in the City on Monday, members of CREDAI said they would liaison with UIDAI in propagating the scheme to include the construction work force.
Nilekani said there were nearly 50 million construction workers and around 200 million dependents making it the second largest employing industry after agriculture in the country. “Workers are often migrants and have multiple provident fund and other benefits accounts given by their employers. Multiple accounts could be avoided with the use of UID making transactions simpler,” he said.
He speculated that once the workers were registered, it could be used to identify skilled workers. The rollout is expected to begin in February 2011.
