According to police, Mahadeva, arrested on the charge of attempting to murder his wife, was sent to the prison on April 19.

He had picked up a quarrel with his wife Sarojamma and hit her on the head in a fit of anger.

Sarojamma could not bear the fact of her husband’s arrest and attempted suicide by setting herself ablaze.

She was rushed to Victoria Hospital and succumbed to burns on Wednesday morning. After learning of Sarojamma’s death, a dejected Mahadeva took the extreme step, police said.

Student’s body found

A 19-year-old diploma student's body was found hanging from the ceiling at the hostel room in Electronic City on Thursday.

The police said, Mithun, a II year diploma student (Electronics) at NIIT hailed from Wayanad in Kerala. He had not scored well in his subjects and the college authorities had asked him to bring his parents. On Wednesday night he is said to have spoken to his parents over phone requesting them to come, only to hear a mouthful. Upset over the turn of events, he decided to take the extreme step, police said.

Hoax bomb call

A hoax bomb call created panic in Military Commando Hospital on old Airport Road on Thursday morning. The hospital staff received a call around 7.30 am with the caller claiming that a bomb had been planted on the hospital premises and it would go off any time. The Ulsoor police, after receiving the message, rushed to spot with bomb disposal squad and searched the entire campus. The call turned out to be a hoax after an extensive search. The call was received from a public telephone coin booth at Maruthi Stores in Domlur.

Retired brigadier held

The Indiranagar police arrested a retired brigadier after he created a ruckus at a mobile phone store on Indiranagar 100 feet road, on Thursday.

Ashok Chacko (68) threatened to open fire with his revolver on the people in the shop, after “stealing” cellphones. He used abusive language when the police rushed to the spot. However, the police arrested him and seized the revolver. The police took him to Nimhans as they suspected Chacko was suffering from mental disorder. Later he was shifted to a remand home, said the police.

Chacko stays alone on 12th main road in Indiranagar as his children and wife parted ways due to his strange behaviour. He had been creating nuisance in the area for the past one-and-half years. Last week he thrashed a taxi driver without any reason and is involved in several such instances.
