The transgenders of the city have joined hands to form an organisation 'Mangaladhama' seeking social and political status for their community, said its president Sowjanya.

Addressing media here Sowjanya said that if given an opportunity, they are ready to contest the upcoming assembly elections.

"The mindset of third genders has changed. We no longer want to involve in begging and work as sex workers for a living, but, want to lead a dignified life like others. The government and the court have recognised us and has extended several benefits. We have formed an organisation to create awareness on the benefits extended to the transgender community by the Siddaramaiah-led government. Financial assistance would be given for those willing to pursue their education and also, to start up a business. The organisation will be formally launched at Kalamandira on February 6," she said.

Speaking to DH, Sowjanya said that there are differences in our birth records. The records recognise us as a male baby. "The Aadhaar and voters identity card we possess has the original name. Our names have changed after being identified as third genders. We are trying to get our identifications changed to get the benefits. We will definitely think of contesting the polls, once the records are set right. Political status is also one of the main objectives of the organisation," she added.
