Spl postal cover on U?S?Mallya released

A special postal cover on Ullal Srinivas Mallya was released as part of his 115th birth anniversary at NITK auditorium in Surathkal. The initiative was taken by Kasturi Balakrishna Pai, Gopalkrishna Prabhu and Gurucharan Mallya, with help from the postal department.

Addressing a gathering after releasing the special postal cover, Post Master General (South Karnataka), S Rajendra Kumar, lauded the efforts of those who took the initiative to release the special postal cover of U S Mallya, who contributed immensely to the development of the district. "There is a need to do the same throughout the nation," he said and extended the full support of the postal department.

He also recalled the other special postal covers pertaining to the region, such as T M A Pai, Dr Shivaram Karanth, Ramabai, St Aloysius Chapel, poet Muddanna, St Lawrence basilica at Attur.

Recalling the contribution of Mallya, KMC Urology Department Head, Dr Lakshman Prabhu, said that the district could find a place on the world map because of his contributions.

Presiding over the programme, NITK Director Karnam Umamaheshwar Rao too lauded the postal department for honouring Mallya.

Contributions of Mallya

Addressing the gathering, Kasturi Balakrishna Pai said that people recall the contribution of Mallya to this day since he was the reason for setting up the New Mangalore Port, engineering colleges, bridges and airport, among other landmarks in the district.

NITK retired dean B R Samaga, Srinivas Rai, Gopalkrishna Prabhu and Gurucharan Mallya and others were present.

Besides U S Mallya's photograph, the postal cover comprises his contributions to the district, that is, NITK, highway, bridge, port and park among others. The special postal covers are available at Hampankatta post office and may be used for speed post among other postal services.
